What Has It Cost Me?

There is a question I have been sitting with lately: What has it cost me?

Not just financially. Not just the obvious things. I mean, what has it cost me to keep saying yes when I wanted to say no? What has it cost me to pretend I was fine when I was frustrated, lonely, tired, afraid, or unsure? What has it cost me to keep being the guy who can handle it all?

For a lot of men, life works, at least on paper. We have built businesses, careers, families, homes, and a reputation. People may see us as dependable, capable, successful. And there is something good about being that man. It feels good to hear that people revere us. But often along this path, we become so committed to carrying everything that we lose touch with what we are carrying inside ourselves. We simply become terrified to let anything terminate.

The real shift is learning that uncertainty does not mean stop.

What Silence Costs

“I’m fine” is one of the most expensive things a man can say. So is “Sure, no problem,” when it actually is a problem. We tell ourselves we are keeping the peace. To do otherwise would say I’m difficult, needy, selfish, or weak. But avoiding the truth does not create peace. It pulls the conflict inward. It leaks out later as distance in a marriage, irritation with the people we love, lack of energy, bad decisions, or a feeling of having it all and hating it at the same time.

What To Do Instead

A lot of men only know how to fully collapse something, to blow everything up. That’s the easy solution: light a match and watch it all burn. Here are some alternatives; these are complete sentences. Tell the truth sooner. Set a boundary without making it an attack. Call a friend instead of telling yourself you do not need anybody. Take care of your body. Take a walk. Lift the weights. Get back on the bike. Make the appointment. Have the conversation you have been rehearsing in your head for six months. Just do the next right thing.

We do not become stronger by avoiding pain, uncertainty, or hard work. Remember, the mind will always gravitate to unfinished tasks. Those are part of the deal. The real shift is learning that uncertainty does not mean stop. It does not mean you are failing. It means you are alive and doing something that matters. Put the next pearl on the string. One honest conversation. One clear no. One request for help. One action that moves you closer to the man you want to be.

Make Peace With That Part

And maybe there is a part of you that has spent years trying to outrun the insecure part, the angry part, the scared part, the part that still believes he has to earn love or prove his worth. Do not shame that part. Pay attention to it. It may not need to be eliminated. It may need to be understood and nurtured. The goal is not a perfect life or a polished image. Perfect and polished are false edicts in our society. The goal is to become whole enough that you no longer have to pretend you are fine.
